Meet Rachael…

Jul 16, 2015 | Meet

Who has an ideas book stashed away? Most of us have a journal bursting at the seams with all those inventive ideas that have popped up as a result of you not being able to find, do or get your hands on something that will get the job done. But then life gets in the way and all those grand plans to ‘Let’s make millions!’ with that light bulb moment get shelved… literally.

Saffron Souk would like to introduce you to Rachael. Rachael struggled to find a bikini that stood up to her active lifestyle and didn’t fall flat on the style stakes, so she decided to get off her bottom and design and manufacture her own brand of ‘Designed in Dubai’ gorgeous swimwear and so SEAKISS was born.

What sort of products do you market?

Swimwear specifically designed to surf in.

When and why did you decide to start your own business?
Seakiss launched in March this year but has been in development and research stage for the last two years.

Basically I couldn’t find a bikini I could surf in and found the region lacked functional swimwear that was fashion driven. After getting my mainstream bikini’s tailored in Satwa to become ‘surf proof’ I decided to have a go at designing them. Two years later and many attempts at production & manufacturing in three different countries, Seakiss was born!

What’s the best thing about setting up your own brand?
Seeing an idea blossom into a reality with the ultimate reward seeing surfer girls wearing them in the water. It still feels special and surreal every time to see a Seakiss bikini at the beach, pool or boat party!

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced?
Every step of the way there has been challenges but I am getting much better at recognizing them and moving through them. Challenges are just the stepping-stones to results. So each step needs to be taken seriously, completed to the best of my ability and then you prepare yourself for the next one. At some point you look back and realize that each step no matter how big or small played a role in accomplishing your dream!

What do you love about selling online?
What I love about selling through Saffron Souk is feeling like I am part of an artisan community and the Seakiss brand is accessible around the globe.

What top tips can you share with other saffronsouk.com shopkeepers?

  • Keep your information and product information up to date.
  • Detail your product information like you were the customer buying.
  • Take advantage of the opportunities presented by the creators of LM as this helps your online and social media presence.
  • Go in LM instagram comps & try and be as engaging as possible.
  • Toil and Tinker are still the best printers for small batch orders. They can help with graphics too at a reasonable price with very professional service.

Where do you source your materials?

All my materials I create from images printed digitally onto a mix of elastane fabric. This method has given me more design & creative flexibility and saves time sourcing already printed fabrics and being restricted in what is available on the market.

5. – 8. We adore the fabric of the SEAKISS bikini’s and as they were inspired by the outdoors and some super cool surfing spots we can see why there’s a reason to love them!

What sets your products apart?
Seakiss is the only surf swimwear label designed in the Middle East. It is ultimately designed for surfer girls but it is also getting a great following from women loving the practical yet fashionable styles. A lot of unique detail has gone into the designs including all styles having a t-back or crisscross back to take tension from the neck, stitched in padding (no more losing them in the wash) and drawstrings for a secure fit.

Where do you get your inspiration to be creative from?
The Sea! My travels to tropical surf destinations, local surroundings (there will be a Dubai capsule collection coming in 2016!), surfer girls & keeping up to speed with swimwear & fashion trends on Instagram!

9. Rachael taking in the outdoors and designing her latest The Tropics collection (released in March 2015) which is inspired by Rachael’s favorite surf destinations in The Maldives, Bali, Costa Rica, California and Mexico

When did you last laugh?
Everyday! I have a dorky big laugh but it comes from the heart!

What keeps you awake at night?
Bikini’s! Since the launch it’s been full steam ahead, which is very exciting and a little overwhelming, but I’m very thankful for all the opportunities I have been given. However it does mean I have ideas and designs come to me at all hours so sleep is a little.

Do you have any regrets?
Nope, I’ve made plenty of mistakes but I know they have all made me who I am on my journey.Do you collect anything? Surfboards! A surfers collection is called a quiver and my quiver includes short boards and a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP). I have about 6 boards but am searching for my next one which will be a shorter style.

What do you think you’d taste like?
Chilli Chocolate: Sweet with a little sassy fire to finish.

Do you believe in luck?
Yes. Making your own luck. Getting out there and taking risks, accepting failure as much as you do success.

What’s the best career advice anyone ever gave you?
The best life advice was from a random Spanish Lady on a train to Lisbon, Portugal. She said ‘I see you as a Lola, and what Lola wants Lola gets.’ At the time I was a young backpacker and had no idea what she meant! But now I know anything is possible so indeed: what Lola wants Lola can get!

What is your greatest aim in life?
To be happy. Travel, being in the water & sharing moments surrounded by gifted talented people is my idea of wealth.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An Actress. Which came true after studying film and television for 3 years at University and then getting an agent in Sydney and appearing in commercials and guest appearances on T.V series like Home and Away, Farscape and All Saints.

If you won the lottery what would be the first thing that you would buy?
I’d create my own personal University with private tutors on a tropical island with amazing surf. The curriculum would be: languages, yoga, business studies, design including graphic design, history & of-course surfing! If anyone wanted to enroll they would have free tuition!

11. We have already got our name down to join Rachael’s tropical island university – with surfing on the agenda and a SEAKISS bikini or two we couldn’t think of a better place to be!
